The study is a comprehensive analysis of gender inequalities in the sphere of economic participation and distribution of economic resources in a comparative perspective, which allows the situation in Serbia to be viewed in comparison with the European Union (EU). It developed from the need to define a somewhat comprehensive, systematic analytical framework as the foundation for studying gender economic inequality. Leading local and foreign literature mostly views these inequalities within the context of labor market participation, which necessarily narrows, and therefore distorts, the image of gender economic inequality
The study offers a systematic review of relevant theories and methodologies, describing and analyzing the situation in the European Union and Serbia, providing an overview of the most significant policies which present important determinants in shaping systematic frameworks for establishing and changing gender relations. The analysis, therefore, starts out with a theoretical and methodological debate on the study of gender economic inequality in contemporary sociology, economy and feminist theory. These inequalities are then studied on an empirical level across various dimensions, and current gender equality policies are finally examined.
In addition to inequalities in the labor market, the study analyses inequalities concerning access to and distribution of economic resources, economic inequalities within families and households, as well as conflicts arising from trying to synchronize domestic work with employment in the labor market. The publication is used as literature for sociology studies at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade.
