Research on human trafficking in Serbia was carried out as part of the project “Expanding the framework for the fight against human trafficking in Serbia.” The research was conducted by the SeConS Development Initiative Group, for the needs of and in cooperation with the organization ASTRA – Anti-Trafficking Action. The main goal of the research is to contribute to the improvement and strengthening of the protection system (including both public and civil sectors) for one of the most vulnerable social groups – victims and persons at risk of human trafficking, through the creation of a unique factual basis (database) on the complex forms of human trafficking that change along with changes in the social context, and to contribute to the recognition and perceptions of the risks of human trafficking among the general population in Serbia, especially among vulnerable groups most exposed to risks. The research was conducted in the period September 2021 to March 2022, and was based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. The key components of the research are:

  • desk research, which included a review of relevant documents (laws, conventions, publications, etc.),
  • survey research on a representative sample of a total of 800 respondents from the general population in Serbia, as well as on an additional sample of 50 respondents from the Roma population,
  • conducting interviews with persons at risk of human trafficking, as well as with victims of various forms of human trafficking, both in Serbia and abroad.
