The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) published the report “Gender Equality Indices in the Western Balkans and Turkey”.

The Gender Equality Index is a unique measuring instrument important for monitoring the progress of gender equality in various areas of society, not only in the EU but also among the Western Balkans and Turkey. It facilitates a comparison at the regional level among EU member states, candidate countries, and potential candidates.

It comprises six core domains (work, money, knowledge, time, power, and health) and two additional domains (intersecting inequalities and violence).

With EIGE’s support, the development of the Gender Equality Index began in the Western Balkans and Turkey in 2015 and continues to be a flagship initiative of EIGE’s cooperation with the region under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA).

So far, four candidate countries for EU membership (Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) have calculated the complete Gender Equality Index, and their results are somewhat lower than the EU-27 average (68.6).
